Who We Are --- How We Got HereCY Databases is a small software development business that specializes in database design and application development. It is owned and operated by the founder, Mr. Carl Yos, who is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Lead Developer. About 12 years ago, Carl, was the owner of a small glass business and found himself in need of estimating software. So he developed an application to meet his needs. What began as a modest project grew into an entire office suite. It did estimates, tracked customers and contracts, managed the advertising campaigns, did the company taxes, and produced financial reports in a double entry bookkeeping format. The seeds for CY Databases were sown. This is where Carl learned first hand about the power that properly designed software can bring to a business. As a businessman, Carl takes pride in producing a quality product in timely manner for a reasonable price. In designing and building a physical structure or a database there are often many ways to do so, but often only one elegant solution, the solution that makes the best use of the materials at hand with the least amount of work. CY Databases is dedicated to the search for the elegant solution. Many companies large and small see the need for a custom Access™ database but lack the time or the expertise to develop one. That is why CY Databases was formed --- to give those businesses another option. We offer custom database design and consulting services. Come and join us in the search for the elegant solution for your project.
Our Philosophy- Reuse code only when it suits the elegant solution --- never just to expedite the development.
- Use Access™ default forms, queries, and structures whenever possible to prevent over coding and the production of needless custom forms.
- Maximize the use of ergonomic techniques to minimize hand movements between forms.
- Use defaults wherever possible and code only where needed to promote maintainability by in-house developers.
- Use Visual Basic™ (VB) and other programming languages as needed to reach the elegant solution.
In Search of the Elegant Solution - Success StoriesOver the years, Carl Yos has developed more than 80 databases and helped to update and correct many more. Here are just a few of the stories. - A company that specialized in procuring emergency road service nationwide opened a new department that required data that was not in the company database. It was not practical to modify the existing databases.
- The elegant solution was an external Access™ database that the department members could use to accumulate and manage the information that they needed. Their efficiency rose 600% in the first month.
A specialized printing company wanted to expand, but was limited by the numerous manual processes in use in the data processing department. - The elegant solution was to use Access™, Excel™, Word™, DBase-IV™ and other software to automate the manual processes and organize the documentation resulting in a 4-fold increase in production without an increase in personnel or manhours worked allowing the company to expand.
An Information Technology (IT) management firm managing the IT assets of an international food company was using a paper form system to dispatch and manage their IT technicians. The requests were faxed back and forth between headquarters and the field. The response time was often days and the forms were full of data errors and omissions. The completed forms were entered into a reporting database by hand. 8 employees were required to manage the technicians. - The elegant solution was to use Pendragon Forms™ and a PDA with a barcode reader carried by the technicians to replace the paper forms and the power of Access™ as an automation platform to update the reporting database with the information collected on the PDA's and to send the technicians new assignments. The response time was reduced to one hour, the data entry errors were virtually eliminated, and the management firm could reduce their staff from 8 to 1 position.
The IT help desk of a national banking corporation used an Oracle database to log call information, but they were not getting the reports that they needed. They received a data dump in the form of two large text files containing the data for the day's business. - The elegant solution was to use the power of Access™ as a platform for VB to input and interpret the text files and then to store the data in several reporting tables. An interactive report interface was used so that the managers could customize the reports to meet their needs and to save those configurations for later use. The database system allowed the managers to view call statistics and fine tune the department. The data also formed the base of an employee incentive program boosting both production and customer satisfaction.
A small computer disposal, refurbishing, and reselling warehouse wanted to expand but was limited by their antiquated software and paper record keeping system. The salesman, service personnel, and owner spent time walking the warehouse looking for equipment. Sales and business were lost as a result. - The elegant solution was an Access™ database to track inventory and its location in the warehouse that was available to all employees. The application provided the detailed information that the salesman and technicians needed but was simple enough for the warehouse staff to use. The company was able to expand their business without additional personnel and moved from a 30,000 square foot warehouse to a 120,000 square foot warehouse.
An international heavy equipment manufacturer used an MFG-Pro™ database to manage an inventory of more than 250,000 different parts. Some parts had to be ordered as much as 18 months in advance while the production demands changed daily. A lengthy manual process was run only quarterly to analyze the data to detect overages and inactive parts. - The elegant solution was to use Access to automate the process. The process then ran weekly. The results were available on the network and to suppliers through a set of reports and graphs. Better inventory control resulted saving more than three million dollars in the first year.
